About New Zealand - an ideal Sailing Holiday Destination
"Uncommon and romantic" were the words entered by Captain James Cook in his diary to describe New Zealand's Bay of Islands, now known to sailors as one of the world's finest cruising regions.
Situated about three hours drive north of Auckland, the country's largest city and its primary international gateway, little has changed in the 200 years since Cook's visit.
Sparkling island studded bays, cobalt blue seas, edged with long silvery beaches, pockets of sub-tropical forests, towns immersed in history and charm
it is for all this that New Zealand has earned the rating as one of the best cruising grounds in the South Pacific.
The historic townships of Opua, Waitangi, Paihia, Russell and Kerikeri provide excellent opportunities for exploring, shopping and eating out. A few miles to the south of Cape Brett lies the beautiful deserted whaling station and anchorage at Whangamumu.
